My lifelong passion for writing and Spanish fortunately combined when after graduating with a degree in Journalism from George Washington University, I received a scholarship to Argentina from the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA).
When the scholarship ended after a year, I decided to stay on to work. During the decades I lived in Buenos Aires, there were numerous opportunities to hone my bilingual skills such as a contributing journalist at La Nación, a prestigious daily newspaper; a public relations manager at the iconic five star Marriott Plaza Hotel; and a translator of everything from menus to papers on Alzheimer’s.
Being immersed in a different culture was fantastic experience. lt showed me the importance of communicating with people in their own language. Being a bilingual translator means selecting the appropriate word that reflects the true meaning of the word in the other language. A qualified person needs to do this. A computer app simply does not cut it.
After realizing computers are not good translators, this has inspired me to start a bilingual translation services company to make sure communication is not lost between individuals cultures and languages.
